Environmental Protection Agency implements the project “Preparation of a national study on the distribution and state of the main ecosystems services on Lithuanian territory”. Project is implemented by the LT03 program “Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services” funded by the EEA Financial Mechanism 2009–2014.
Aim of this project is to improve integration of the ecosystems and biodiversity aspects into other public policy sectors developing knowledge basis on ecosystems, their state and services provided to the society. Activities of the project are dedicated to form the methodical background for the national mapping and assessment of the state of ecosystem services by preparing comprehensive methodical recommendations. In addition, activities are to collect data and other basic information and map the key Lithuanian ecosystem services, prepare relevant maps; valuate their quality and state and the ability of ecosystems providing these services on national level. Thus, the goal stated in the Target 2 of the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020 (“Maintain and restore ecosystems and their services”) Action’s 5 (“Improve knowledge of ecosystems and their services in the EU”) first part (Member States, with the assistance of the Commission, will map and assess the state of ecosystems and their services in their national territory) will be implemented.
